Zhongding International Construction Group. Starting the business overseas is an accident rather than a story. What’s the reason behind? There were many difficulties. Except for naturel disasters and kidnaping, we have encountered all other difficulties. From having only four women and seven men in the company,we have developed into a company with nearly 2000 people. Market-oriented workers are about eight thousand to ten thousand. In 16 countries, 20 provinces, 65 areas, we have nearly 200 projects on the run.
In the last century of 1990s, transitioned from coal business, Zhongding International Construction Group is facing a life-changing challenge. Accept the situation passively or take the initiative actively? Zhongding International Construction Group has made its own decision. We transitioned from planed economy originally. Coal resources were depleted. So what about those employees? We need to help them find jobs. We need to make changes for them. We need to run different businesses, then we have created many factories and firms through running different businesses. One important idea is to go abroad. You can say that we are passive and also can be active. If you say we are active, we were passive indeed and then become active. Why do we become active? It is because being active is our strategy. Being active is our business. So we should firmly bring our business model overseas. In the past, we were doing project contracting. Later on we thought that we have the ability to do foreign investment. Then we now think that we are walking with two legs on foreign investment. On September, 1990, the revitalized Zhongding International decided to “borrow ships” to go abroad. More than 250 explorers embraced the blue ocean from the black coal roadway for the first time. So we have concluded five stages of running business overseas.
First of all, it is to “borrow the ship” and cooperate with China State Construction on contract. The second stage, It is called “riding the ship”. Wherever there is a project, we would run over there. The third
It is “operating the ship”. We started to have primitive accumulation and experience. We can buy ships. We can go abroad by ourselves. The fourth stage, so as to say building the ship means designing projects in the residing country at the current. After the “Belt and Road” Initiative was raised, I think the international project is huge, then we can cooperate with other companies even the central enterprises. We called it combining ships. That is to incorporate resources. Along with the raising of the “Belt and Road” Initiative, Zhongding International similar to other Chinese companies, is working hard to provide Chinese wisdom to the world.
The open economy in China includes four stages. The first stage is from 1978 to 1992. What is the position of China during that time?
China was a laggard far behind in the world economic arena. From 1992 to 2002, until we joined WTO at Doha Conference and set the tune. After the “Going Global” strategy came out, we have been the leading role in the world economic arena. After 2002, before the Party’s 18th National Congress, we are always the supporting role in the world economic arena. In 2013, especially in 2015, our “Belt and Road” Initiative came out and movements were made. This initiative has been matured. Our initiative is the principle of achieving shared growth through discussion and collaboration. No matter improving at the theory or practice further，I think the “Belt and Road” Initiative is an upgrade version of “Going Global” Strategy.We are certainly confident at our decisions now. Five years have past. The “Belt and Road” Initiative has took its root on this vast expanse of land and set sail on the vast ocean. Zhongding International is gradually playing the more crucial role in the regional cooperation and development. The essence of the “Belt and Road” Initiative is community of common destiny. The foundation of community of common destiny should be community of common responsibility. So what is the prerequisite? The prerequisite is community of shared interests. It is to consider the interests of the residing country, the general public and the country. For example, when we go to those residing countries, your foreign investment cannot destroy their environment. We need to provide jobs and trainings for them to address their employment issues, to address their tax issues.This is an issue about worldview. The worldview is not about how to look at other people. More importantly it is about how people look at you.Therefore，you and the world are living harmoniously then.It is what we called the common destiny.
For decades, at the creation of the world, surging forward with great momentum, carrying the glory and dreams of Zhongding people. Regardless of language and culture, they are building an internationalized Zhongding. Running international business and an international company, you definitely need internationalized talents. This is the most basic thing. They need to acknowledge your company. We are the first to elect foreign model worker in the nation over the past decade. Wearing large red flowers, awarding certificates and bonuses, then bringing them to travel. Letting foreigners to talk about our company. The storytelling of Chinese stories from foreigners can take great effects. One person, one talk is better than telling stories by ourselves. Therefore, they treated the company as home. They are very sincere also.I have worked at Zhongding for eight years. Thanks to my teacher in China who taught me in person. Now I am the driver in the project department and the Arabic translator. The buildings constructed in Algeria by Chinese companies have good reputations. A couple of my friends got the affordable housings built by Zhongding. They heard that I am working for this company and felt envious. Never forget, there will always be an echo. We have reasons to believe that under the “Belt and Road” Initiative, Zhongding International has flipped into a new chapter. We have the ability of state-owned companies, the vigor of private companies and the credibility of government . I think marketing is the competitive power. Making my company become an internationalized Zhongding. The first is to emancipate the mind for going abroad. The second is to actively and steadily go abroad, which means the altitude is active and the method is reliable. The third is to go abroad with credibility. When you want to get closer to the general public, you should get in this industry. The fourth is that the brand quality should go onto the next level, go to the top of the industry. We should come back to safety and health in terms of risk prevention. We should persistently move forward. In this way, it certainly should be ecological and sustainable. It should take on the social responsibility and international responsibility. We were simply a project contractor, however now we become a comprehensive service provider and problem solver. You will have material gains. You shouldn’t feel empty spiritually. You should have both successes in material civilization and spiritual civilization.
